I learned about the protests against a wetland restoration. It was unfathomable to me that people were protesting something that I would have thought would have obvious support \u2013 especially in California! Finally my son-in-law explained it to me \u2013 it is a California thing \u2013the fringe there are wacked out lefties \u2013 way over \u2013 and their thinking is to leave things the way they are??? Or some kind of logic that is known only to them, (Mark Gold said \u201cNIMB\u201d not in my backyard \u2013 but I couldn\u2019t see it)\u00a0 Mark F. said the fringe people in California are not like the fringe people in, for example, the Midwest, where you might get a push back from the right \u2013 white supremacists, small government, no government, business and profit is supreme\u2026.. no tree huggers getting in the way of making money or telling others what to do for the sake of the environment. In California the mainstream is like the left here in the midwest &#8212; and the crazy fringe is a crazy &#8220;left&#8221; fringe.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It was a real awakening \u2013 I consider myself well read and worldly \u2013 I read three newspapers every day \u2013 including the NYTimes, &#8212; but I had to look at the fact that my world is insular in a way I was unaware \u2013 and there are worlds I do not fathom out there \u2013 THAT I DO NOT KNOW ABOUT. Literally, a bunch of stuff I do not know that I do not know. And I have been incredibly arrogant about this \u2013 my own hubris.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I can accept that I do not know what it would be like to, for example, live in Syria. During my world travels, I look at people and try to see how they are living, try to put myself in their shoes, and I pride myself in being able to do this to some extent. Tried to understand, for example, with the help of friend Daniel, how the Islamic Egyptians see the world \u2013 appreciating a culture that loudly, over a PA system, \u00a0prays to God 5 times a day in melodious song. \u00a0Impressed and open to that\u2026.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">But now,at 69 \u2013 soon to be 70 (threescore and ten) \u2013I am stunned with my ignorance. And I bow to it\u00a0 &#8212; and I need to admit that I do not know what is best for many people, and probably even myself.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In the lead up to my back surgery, I asked my guide Susan, from the other side, what to do \u2013 and her words were \u201clet them take care of you\u201d I have trusted that \u2013 found good people to help me and take care of me through this time.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Ah California\u2026. Opening of my eyes \u2013some of the very strangest people I have ever seen \u2013 shopping in the thrift store where I picked up a beautiful espresso cup and saucer\u2026out the car window\u2014 a tree \u2013 that looked like something a child would draw \u2013 or Dr. Seuss \u2013 brown trunk, no leaves and a red flower on the end of each branch. Cully and I looked it up \u2013 \u201cCoral Tree\u201d \u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2498\" alt=\"CoralTree1\" src=\"http:\/\/rockaria.net\/bluebirdprairie\/wp-content\/uploads\/CoralTree1-450x347.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"http:\/\/rockaria.net\/bluebirdprairie\/wp-content\/uploads\/CoralTree1-450x347.jpg 450w, http:\/\/rockaria.net\/bluebirdprairie\/wp-content\/uploads\/CoralTree1-150x115.jpg 150w, http:\/\/rockaria.net\/bluebirdprairie\/wp-content\/uploads\/CoralTree1-625x482.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I can almost feel a new childhood coming as I age \u2013 one in which nothing is taken for granted anymore: neither my understanding of the world, nor even the nature of the world itself.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On my trip to California I had a big awakening that there are things totally outside my experience and understanding.
