Desert National Wildlife Refuge<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Two pickups meet on a dusty, gravel road in the desert.<\/span><\/p>\n

In one, man in cowboy hat raises a hand.<\/span><\/p>\n

I think, you have to be friendly out here<\/span><\/p>\n

You never know when you might need each other.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The visitor center is closed<\/span><\/p>\n

But there is a lively bus load of middle school kids,<\/span><\/p>\n

Looks like eighth grade,<\/span><\/p>\n

Eating their lunch under the roof.<\/span><\/p>\n

They like George.<\/span><\/p>\n

One girl asks politely if she can pet the dog.<\/span><\/p>\n

Park worker wonders what kind of a dog is that.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our standard answer\u2026 we don\u2019t know.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the trail, suddenly I realize why this place is precious.<\/span><\/p>\n

Water, pure fresh water in a little stream,<\/span><\/p>\n

Creates a mini ecosystem of grass, small trees,<\/span><\/p>\n

And haven for life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I understand \u201coasis\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And imagine what it would be like to<\/span><\/p>\n

Come on horseback, or wagon, or on foot,<\/span><\/p>\n

And see the little green in the distance<\/span><\/p>\n

And wonder if I was seeing things<\/span><\/p>\n

And fall upon this pretty place like heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n

George seems to sense it<\/span><\/p>\n

Begs and pulls to go in,<\/span><\/p>\n

I let him briefly<\/span><\/p>\n

(I don\u2019t think it is allowed)<\/span><\/p>\n

But I cannot resist.<\/span><\/p>\n

He is in heaven too.<\/span><\/p>\n
