Finally Spring here in Minnesota — the forsythia and the front door spring wreath out of storage.

Spring!

Spring!

And here is Bob in his workshop — and we are grateful.

We had a big scare. Bob was taken to the ER in the middle of the night March 14 – unconscious and not breathing well. He regained consciousness in the hospital and then stayed a few days, partly in ICU. They give him every test – brain scan, heart monitor, CT scan MRI — and blood work and maybe some I don’t remember. They could not determine the cause of what seemed to me to be a seizure. His instructions were that he could resume normal activities, but not driving. After every unexplained unconsciousness no driving for three months. He is on a heart monitor for a month. We have a follow up with the neurologist in three months.

Neighbors, friends, everyone was so helpful, Jodi across the street and my friend from the library Sarah and her daughter took care of George. Our neighbor to the north said her whole church was praying for him. I was too. Bob’s good friend Bryan, across the street, when told he was going to be all right, said,” you mean I will see Bob back in his building again?” Bob’s children were in close touch.

Treasure all the time we have together.

Mexico 2015

I take fewer and fewer photos each year, but I had to take a few of our friends and this gorgeous place. The weather was perfect, the ocean was calm for a number of days, company was good, books read — too many to count. (Thank you son Ron, for Bob’s Kindle Fire … it was a treat for him … I could download all the books I had on my old kindle and he happily reread many – Lucas Davenport, Chief Inspector Brunetti.  He could also get the Washington Post and email… we are hooked on the fire).  Many old friends who become more dear with each passing year, Pat and Richard from Sag Harbor (I have some of her day lilies in my garden), Barry and Elizabeth from New York, and our friends from Wisconsin, Joanne and Lee, came with us again.

Our bird's eye view from our balcony. You can see the ocean just barely, and the bar on the right.

Thanksgiving 2014

We had a nice visit with Todd and Ann Marie. I had a chef! Ann Marie brought the turkey and fixins’ and made the meal. I did manage a pumpkin pie. Now, today we will watch the Badger/Gopher “axe” rivalry… Lots of Badger fans in this family, but Bob seems to have taken to the Gophers.

Wonderful dinner - thanks to Ann Marie.

We are thankful for so many things. Each other and all the loved family members and friends. George is with us for a little while longer. We learned he has cancer, but he seems the same, just slowing down.

We are especially thankful for the good doctors in St. Louis treating brother Jon’s heart. Never forget how precious life is. Tell people you love them.  I love all of you too, reading this post.

VOTE – Minnesota stands out as a sliver of blue sky in the nation! Dayton and Franken won early

We have quite a nice collection of political signs in our excellent location — a big lawn and a busy street.

Don’t look for BluebirdPrairie honey in your Christmas stocking :-(

It was a bad year for our hives. We had so little to harvest that we did not extract it, but just made three little bottles of comb honey — and that was it.

sadly... the extent of our honey for 2014. But you can also see apples that we picked from one of our trees. Bees did their pollinating job anyway!

sadly… the extent of our honey for 2014. But you can also see some apples we picked from one of our trees. The bees did their pollinating job anyway!

The problem 1) we lost one hive over last winter so that hive was a new package this year. New packages do not usually produce much leftover honey to harvest.

2) We were away for three crucial weeks in June. When we were to leave (the two hives we had were doing great) I was worried the overpopulated one, that made it through the winter, would swarm while we were away. SO.. we attempted a “walk away split” that created two hives from the one. We did not know which part of the hive had the queen, but the best case scenario is the part of the hive with no queen would make a queen. That did not happen for one reason or another (always a mystery with the bees) neither of these hives produced any extra honey for harvesting.

BUT now we have learned a whole lot more about it all and we have two healthy looking hives going into winter with heavy stores in three deep supers. They are in the new relocated bee yard in the woods. We will add a new package in the spring to the hive that did not have a queen and would not make it. Bob disassembled that hive — if there were good workers still functioning, they might find a new home in one of the other hives. But it was probably full of drones from some “laying workers,” females who lay unfertilized eggs that only hatch into drones.

Bob says, farmers have to put up with crop failure sometimes… or something like that

Indian Horse Relay Championship at Canterbury Park Sept. 12, 2014

Bob and I met our friend Beatrice Looking Horse and her family at Canterbury Park in Shakopee for the Indian Horse Relay races.  Wilfred “Wolf” Looking Horse was the rider for the Lakota Pride team from Cheyenne River Reservation. The race is run bareback and one rider races around the course and then changes horses in front of the grandstand — and repeats it with another horse for three times around. Beatrice said Wolf did not have his favorite horse since he ran into a fence or something and was injured so didn’t come.

This picture of Wolf and his family helpers was in the paper. I tried to get some good photos but you needed a camera like this!

Meeting Loretta Weinberg and a day at Venice Beach August 2014

Just got back from a trip to LA to see the little LA family (boys actually not so little these days!) While there I shook the hand of Loretta Weinberg, New Jersey State Senate Majority Leader, who Vanity Fair called “the crusader” — the instigator of Bridgegate. Our daughters are neighbors and good friends. She is 79 and says (in the Vanity Fair story (August 2014) that “she knew a cover-up was going on ‘the minute I heard (Bill Baroni) open his mouth’ to testify.” In the article she goes on to say “I attribute my investigative experience to the fact that I raised adolescents.”

It was a memorable and inspiring meeting for me (who just turned 70).

I also spent a whole day in the company of Moms, Dads and kids at Venice Beach. The kids had boogie boards, the moms and dads came equipped with sunscreen, food, blankets, towels, umbrellas and conversation. AND my daughter surfed!

Always the garden…. August 4, 2014

This is when the garden is such inspiration and joy. For the first time I have seen my daylilies blooming. I became entranced with these lilies and then remembered that my New York friend, whom I know from Mexico, is a daylily nut… so when I asked, she sent me some last fall from her divides — all of them bloomed except one, but maybe that is a later bloomer. Here they are…

This is my first day lily -- Mini Pearl. I bought it here at Rose Floral last summer. It was blooming at the time and that is when I fell in love with day lilies. Sweet bloom and a soft fragrance that is indescribable.
