Eugene Landt

Eugene Fay Landt, 84, of Wisconsin Dells died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003 at his home in Dell Prairie.
Eugene was born March 4, 1918 , in Portage , Wis. , the son of Newton Allison and Fay Montez (nee Brown) Landt. He was raised and went to school in Kilbourn City , graduating from high school in 1936. He graduated from the University of Montana Forestry School, Missoula , in 1940. Following graduation he worked for the Nekoosa Edwards Paper Company in Port Edwards, Wis.
In June of 1941 he married Mary Jane Loucks of Madison , Wis. In 1942 Gene began work at the Forest Products Laboratory, U.S. Forest Service in Madison , Wis. ; then after six months he entered the U.S. Navy as an Ensign in June, 1943. He was assigned to the Destroyer DD495 Endicott later to the Panama Sea Frontier in Balboa, Canal Zone as operations officer.
In 1946 he returned to the Forest Products Lab and in 1955 he transferred to the U.S. Forest Service Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Experiment Station in Rapid City , South Dakota . In 1963 he transferred to the USDA Forest Service Research Branch in Washington , D.C. where he was staff assistant to the director of forest products research. In 1967 he was appointed product leader at the North Central Forest Experiment Station at Carbondale , Illinois on the Southern Illinois University campus.
Gene retired from the U.S. Forest Service in 1973 after 32 years of service and moved back to Madison , Wis. , where he accepted a position as forest products utilization specialist for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. He retired again five years later and moved to the tree farm in Adams County he and his wife had purchased 25 years earlier with his sister and brother-in-law Tom and Nona Crist.
Eugene is a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Wisconsin Dells and a member of the Dells Country Historical Society where he was curator of the Bowman House museum for several years. He was known as a tireless creator of woodworks for his church, friends and family, which he continued until his death. He never said no to a request, and never took any payment.
Eugene is survived by a sister, Nona Crist, Wisconsin Dells; his three children, Jeremy (Myrna) Landt, Santa Fe, N.M., Judy Gibson, Wisconsin Dells, and Jon (Mary) Landt, Carbondale, Ill.; grandchildren Deborah (Jiri) Kubicek, Los Alamos, N.M., Christopher (Debbie) Landt, Las Cruces, N.M., Julie (Michael) Esterl, Madison, Wis., Matthew (Terrie) Landt, Austin, Tex.; Todd Nordby, Des Plaines, Ill., Cully Nordby (Mark Frye), Oakland, Ca., Gray and Sarah Landt, both of Carbondale, Ill.; seven great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, a brother Allison and his parents.
A memorial service will be held at United Presbyterian Church in Wisconsin Dells at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29 with a gathering for friends and family at the church before and after the service. Rev. Steve G. Keller will officiate.
