God Bless
Whoever planted two Colorado Blue Spruce
close to the house, but not too close, near to where the feeders are now
shelter for bird’s young all summer,
shelter for puffed cold birds in winter,
shelter for drinking water.
Who planted them so long ago?
They tower far past the roof of this place, once the Nelson farm.
I think the barn was here where we live, the old farmhouse is across the street.
I feel my steps retrace ones from long ago.
I carry food and water for birds,
but I can smell the musty barn,
hear cows moan and heave a sigh, chickens flutter and twitter.
Thank you, tree planter,
thank you, Great Mystery,
thank you, lucky stars that led us to this place.
